Pharmacy Technician Certification: How Major Can It Be?

Healthcare careers such as that of a pharmacy tech can offer excellent financial benefits and job security, and one of the reasons why is because people will always require healthcare services, and the demand for quality medication is no exception.

Anyone who wants to maximize their success in this career should seriously consider acquiring a pharmacy technician certification. Depending on what part of the United States you will be working in, pharmacy technician certification may or may not be required. One of the reasons why most states require pharmacy tech certification is because it is an excellent indication of ones competency and proficiency.

With the amount of competition going on in this career, you simply cannot take certification for granted, even if you want to seek employment in a State that does not require certification. If you try to make an observation, you will notice that a lot of employers these days seek pharmacy techs that have acquired certification. It is also important to remember that pharmacy techs are also required in most States to be registered with the State board of pharmacy prior to employment. Different States will have different requirements, although there are some that will check whether you have a high school diploma or GED (General Education Development).

Keep in mind that registration and certification are different, the former being a mandatory requirement and the latter being a voluntary requirement.

In order to be certified, you will need to pass a certification exam administered by private organizations. Once you have been certified, you will still have to apply for recertification every 2 years and this requires a minimum of 20 hours worth of continuing education acquired through training programs offered by colleges and pharmacy associations. Should you decide to apply for voluntary certification, you can choose between the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) and the Institute for the Certification of Pharmacy Technicians (ICPT).

These organizations will require that you are clear from any felony, drug-related or pharmacy-related convictions in order to be eligible for the certification exam they administer. For more information regarding the certification exam, you can visit the PTCB or the ICPT website. Besides better employment opportunities and salary thresholds, another benefit of applying for pharmacy technician certification is that this will help in your career advancement.
